03.05.10: Steve

While working in my sketchbook a few days ago, I doodled a shop interior as an idea I 'd had a while back. I decided to have a go at making it in Flash as it would show the social interactive sides to the game, an NPC, more of my research but in an accessible way and finally another interactive structure in Flash.

I planned to have a simple perspective for the layout, with a large shop counter to display the items on. While I only meant for this to be a simple screen… I MIGHT HAVE GOT A BIT CARRIED AWAY.

I have made a couple of carrousels in Flash in previous projects as I liked the cycling function both aesthetically and in how it can make the most of small screen space. I have created one here but much more improved than before, learning from the limitations of the previous models.I spent a long time refining it, using placeholder boxes for where the items will go and you can now cycle backwards and forwards, with a little easing for prettiness. What I am more proud of is that you can speed through the carrousel as fast as you want and it cycles accurately, as my previous attempts weren’t buggy but did limit how fast you could navigate.

To fill the empty room I decided not just to draw an NPC, but to build him in individual components so that I could make ragdoll animations with him. I didn’t initially intend to, but you can now open up dialogue with Steve the Blacksmith and navigate through a few different interactive options. You can chat about a few topics which trigger his moustache to waggle to look like speaking and for a cartoon speech bubble to appear with text. Alternatively, you can try to rob him which changes his status from friendly to hostile and raises your pistol. I will develop this a little further so that you can fight with him, as well as add the purchase items.
